Everybody Has to Find What They Can Do
Why We’re Launching The Power Magazine in a Time We Feel So Powerless
Lately, I’ve been looking at what is happening in Tennessee and across this country, and I’ll be honest. I have felt powerless.
From attacks on voting rights, to the dismantling of DEI, to the general criminalization of anything Black people like to do, to immigration raids and families being separated, the issssh can feel too big to face.
And after the election in 2024, I closed my eyes for a while. I stopped watching the news. I needed distance from the grief.
When I opened my eyes again, a few months later, It was worst than I could imagine.
I realized that the luxury of eye closing and the feeling powerlessness is part of the design.
They want us tired. They want us quiet. They want us convinced that nothing we do matters. And for a bit they got what they wanted. But then the ancestors started speaking to me. And reminded me that I was given the gift of an artist for a reason.
That is why I am starting The Power Magazine.
The Power is a publication for people who are tired of yelling online and wondering what comes next. It is for artists, organizers, parents, students, neighbors, and everyday people who want to understand what power they actually have and how to use it.
I have no interest in chasing headlines, news cycles or telling people what to do. I only want to empower the disempowered with information and inspiration.
We are raising funds now to launch this publication, to pay writers and artists, to print the first issue, and share stories that move people from despair into action.
